La Romana is a small, friendly and traditional Spanish town with few of the locals speaking any English. Everyone knows everyone and it is very reminiscent of UK village communities 40 -50 years ago. Wine, olives, almonds, shoe making and marble are the main sources of employment and income for the town.
There are 3 supermarkets for you to stock up on your bits and pieces, 2 pharmacies should you need any medications whilst staying with us and quite a few bars and restaurants considering the small size of the village.
The small local market is held on a Saturday morning between 9-2pm. Here you can buy fruit, veg, meat, fish, cheeses and other food stuffs, housewares, clothes, shoes and some tourist souvenirs. An even smaller market selling just fruit and veg is held in the indoor market on Wednesday mornings from 9-2pm.
We are lucky to have 3 parks for the kids too. The one in the centre of town is definitely better for smaller kids although medium ones can have fun there too. The park at the top of town is for bigger ones and there is also a zip wire and lots of lovely shade too to get out of the heat. The 3rd park at the far end of town is smaller but still fun. Ask us for directions if you are planning to visit.
If you haven’t already experienced a truly authentic Spanish fiesta then come and experience one in La Romana. It takes place in the 3rd week of August and is put on by the locals, for the locals. Whilst Spain has been in the depths of recession for many years now, the one thing that is never compromised on is the fiesta budget! It is an opportunity for the locals to let their hair down and everyone can join in too. There are parades, live music, dancing, water fights, activities for the kids and of course lots of eating and drinking. It really shouldn’t be missed.
Another time to visit La Romana is February. Its almond blossom time and it is truly a beautiful time of year. The countryside turns into a blanket of pink and white candyfloss. It is just lovely and we are lucky enough to sit right in the middle of it. The weather is warming up a little too so you get bright blue skies as the background to your stay.
